U.S. liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports have once again delivered explosive good news! The Commonwealth LNG project, led by Caturus, has officially reached a $9.75 billion Final Investment Decision (FID). This super-scale terminal, with a total investment of $13 billion, will export up to 9.5 million tons of high-quality LNG annually from Louisiana, injecting powerful momentum into the global energy market!

The Commonwealth LNG project has a total investment of $13 billion. The FID has successfully closed $9.75 billion in senior project finance debt. Due to overwhelming market enthusiasm, the equity and debt sides together attracted up to $21.25 billion in oversubscribed commitments, demonstrating extreme international confidence in U.S. LNG.

The core operator is the independent energy investment platform Caturus (previously controlled by Kimmeridge and recently injected with capital by a UAE sovereign wealth fund). The equity investment lineup is truly “dream-team” level:

Kimmeridge leads as project chairman

Mubadala Energy (UAE) holds 24.1% stake and directly co-invests

Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPP Investments) co-leads

Global giants including BlackRock, Ares Infrastructure, and EOC Partners have also joined as major equity partners

The project is located in Cameron Parish, Louisiana, on the west bank of the Calcasieu Ship Channel in the Gulf of Mexico, occupying 118.8 acres — an exceptionally advantageous geographic position.

Core Process & Modular Revolution: Technip Energies Leads with SnapLNG™ Low-Carbon Solution

The project adopts the SnapLNG™ modular low-carbon technology from French engineering giant Technip Energies. It features 6 natural gas liquefaction and pretreatment production trains, delivering high efficiency, environmental performance, and rapid construction.

Compressor System: The Powerful “Heart” of Refrigeration

Supplier: U.S.-based Baker Hughes

Configuration: 6 × LM9000 gas turbines directly driving mixed-refrigerant compressor units

Highlights: The LM9000 is one of the highest-efficiency and fastest-starting dual-shaft gas turbines in its class, with single-unit output of approximately 65–75 MW.

Cold Box Core: Extreme Low-Temperature Heat Exchange Expert

Supplier: U.S.-based Honeywell

Configuration: 6 × main cryogenic wound-tube heat exchangers

Material: Deep-cryogenic-grade aluminum alloy or high-nickel stainless steel, capable of withstanding –162°C extreme liquefaction temperatures for stable and efficient operation.

Self-Generation Power System: Stable and Reliable Power Guarantee

Supplier: Solar Turbines (a Caterpillar company)

Configuration: 4 × Titan 350 industrial gas turbine generator sets

Total Capacity: Approximately 120 MW, using high-efficiency natural gas simple-cycle power generation to meet the project’s own electricity needs.

Modular LNG Storage Tanks: Safe, High-End Full-Containment Design

Design Consultant: Renowned firm Arup handles structural, mechanical, and marine engineering design

Scale: Plans for 5–6 modular tanks, each with 40,000–50,000 m³ capacity (total volume approx. 240,000–250,000 m³)

Structure & Material: Double steel full-containment tanks; inner tank uses 9% nickel steel for superior low-temperature toughness; outer tank provides leak-proof protection. All modules are fully assembled in off-site shipyards or fabrication yards before being barged to the site, significantly enhancing safety and construction efficiency.

Inlet Pipeline: 42-Inch Super Trunk Line Enables True “Wellhead-to-Water” Integration

To ensure stable feedstock supply, the project includes a new high-pressure gas pipeline:

Length: 3.04 miles (approx. 4.88 km)

Diameter: 42 inches (approx. 1,066 mm) — upgraded from the original 30-inch plan

Material: High-strength carbon steel pipe (API 5L X70 or X80 grade) with fusion-bonded epoxy (FBE) anti-corrosion coating, suitable for Louisiana’s humid and saline coastal environment

Interconnection Capability: Extends northward to connect with three major U.S. natural gas trunk lines (including Bridgeline 20/12-inch and Kinetica 16-inch pipelines), with a transport capacity of up to 1.44 Bcf/d

Gas Source: Directly links to newly acquired rich shale gas assets such as Galvan Ranch, truly achieving vertical integration from “Wellhead-to-Water”.

Dedicated Terminal & LNG Carriers: Super Berths Ready to Welcome Global Giant Vessels

The project is constructing one large dedicated berthing terminal on the west bank of the Calcasieu Ship Channel:

Compatibility: Can directly accommodate ultra-large LNG carriers with capacities up to 216,000 m³ (Q-Flex type or next-generation large commercial vessels)

Operating Density: After commissioning, the terminal is expected to handle up to 3 super-large LNG vessels per week on average, totaling approximately 156 loadings per year

Vessel Supply & Transportation: Ships will be provided by long-term SPA buyers and major trading houses, including:

Malaysia’s PETRONAS (via its world-class fleet under MISC Berhad)

Saudi Aramco (Aramco Trading)

U.S. largest natural gas producer EQT

Global commodity giants Glencore and Mercuria

Commercial Outlook: 9.5 Million Tons Nearly Sold Out, 2030 Startup to Generate $3 Billion+ Annually

The first phase is scheduled to commence commercial operations in 2030, delivering more than $3 billion in annual export revenue to Louisiana. It marks a milestone “$100 billion” investment achievement for Governor Jeff Landry’s administration.

The entire 9.5 million tons annual capacity has been almost entirely contracted. The prestigious and diversified long-term buyer lineup fully demonstrates strong global demand for U.S. LNG. Ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East have further tightened international supply, providing powerful market and geopolitical tailwinds for this project.
